About HMMA

Hollow Metal Manufacturers Association Mission Statement

The Hollow Metal Manufacturers Association (HMMA) promotes the advantages of hollow metal products.

HMMA is the leader in:

  • Developing performance standards and specifications
  • Creating and testing products, and
  • Providing progressive solutions.

Established in 1969, the Hollow Metal Manufacturers Association (HMMA) is a voluntary, non-profit business association comprised of over 60 member companies throughout North America. HMMA is the largest of four divisions of the Chicago-based National Association of Architectural Metal Manufacturers (NAAMM), an organization established in 1938 with roots reaching back more than ninety years to 1907.

Mandate to Serve

While the HMMA is a group composed of companies that manufacture, distribute and promote the use of hollow metal door and frame products, its principal mission truly looks outward to serve the building construction industry by creating the conditions essential for the production of high quality, high performance hollow metal products.

With the support of NAAMM, member firms, and dozens of committed volunteers, HMMA achieves this key mission in many ways. The HMMA develops, maintains and distributes technical information on hollow metal products, principally in the form of state-of-the-art technical specifications and detailed standards, documents that provide a credible, objective benchmark that specifiers have come to trust.

In addition, the HMMA produces and distributes periodic technical reports and updates, documents that stem from our members' collective experience and on-going commitment to find hollow metal innovations and advancements and educate others about them. The HMMA serves the building construction industry by involving itself in and communicating the results of the joint testing of fire doors and frames.

Organized For Growth

HMMA member companies are united in their business focus of producing, selling, distributing or maintaining an exhaustive range of hollow metal doors and frame products of diverse capability, from those suitable for standard commercial building applications, to the most specialized of products requiring superior acoustical, fire resistant or security properties. Member firms are of all shapes and sizes and are broadly distributed throughout North America, ensuring that you have ready access to the products you need, when you need them.

The majority of the work of the HMMA is conducted at the committee level under the guidance of elected officers and organizational by-laws. HMMA's Technical Committee, composed of volunteers from member organizations, is perhaps the most active and important contributor to the achievement of the HMMA mandate. Volunteers from member companies meet several times per year for intensive sessions to study, develop and refine HMMA specifications and standards.

The Committee consults extensively with other industry groups, construction and design professionals and government officials about hardware locations and building code improvements, manages the HMMA's on-going hollow metal door and frame testing programs and generally, ensures that the needs of the building construction industry are well promulgated to member companies so that new products and approaches can be developed. Other HMMA committees, including the Promotion Committee and the Finance Committee among others, round out the work of the HMMA and ensure that it continues to be managed professionally and remain accountable to its members and to the building industry alike.

Supporting Members

The HMMA provides a wide array of value added services to its members.

In addition to the promotion of member firms and their quality products to national and international audiences, the HMMA facilitates the exchange of information between members regarding management issues, industry happenings, manufacturing innovations and emerging technical developments. It is through this unique interchange of information that HMMA member firms, both individually and as a specialized industry sector, continue to grow and develop to meet the evolving needs and demands of design and building construction professionals throughout North America.

Indeed, the fact that the HMMA has the reputation of being the benchmark against which architects and other specifiers measure their own plans attests to our success and confirms our position as the leading organization of its kind.

NAAMM Background

Since 1938, The National Association of Architectural Metal Manufacturers (NAAMM) has represented a wide variety of architectural metal products for building construction. NAAMM currently has four operating Divisions, which promote the use of their specific products through the development and distribution of technical standards. The Divisions are as follows:

  • The Architectural Metal Products Division (AMP)
  • Expanded Metal Manufacturers Association (EMMA)
  • Hollow Metal Manufacturers Association (HMMA)
  • Metal Bar Grating Division (MBG)

Through NAAMM, the parent organization, the four Divisions receive a crossover of benefits. For example, the Metal Finishes Manual provides information on finishing which is applicable to all divisions. Also, issues related to topics of mutual interest to manufacturers, such as workman's compensation, employee relations, right-to-know, insurance issues, EPA and OSHA are addressed among members.

The Hollow Metal Manufacturers Association is a very active division with standing committees to address the technical and marketing needs of member companies. HMMA has published, and continues to update, "The Hollow Metal Manual". This manual is a comprehensive guide to the industry's standard practices and construction specifications. The Division is involved in the joint testing of fire doors and frames.  The HMMA member firms pay additional dues to support their projects and programs. For more information about HMMA membership and dues, please contact NAAMM.

Why Hollow Metal?

Hollow metal door and frame products have earned an enviable reputation with architects, engineers and construction trade professionals around the world, and provide a wealth of benefits uncommon in competing products. When specifying door and frame systems for your next project, consider the many demonstrated benefits of hollow metal products:

Durability

Hollow metal products are rugged, durable, long-lasting and offer great endurance through time. They resist environmental stresses like heat and humidity that adversely impact other door and frame products, and exhibit few problems in the field such as warping and delaminating. Hollow metal products are easy to maintain and ensure virtually trouble free operation for years and years.

Security

Hollow metal door and frame products are ideal solutions in settings demanding a high degree of security, including courthouses, detentioncenters and prisons, just to name a few. The use of bullet, fire, explosive and tamper proof hollow metal products that meet and exceed the HMMA's proven technical standards will ensure a secure environment for many years to come. These same hollow metal products can be used effectively in less demanding but no less important settings that require a strong measure of security, including school entrances, retail stores, warehouses and manufacturing concerns.

Broad Range of Applications & Design Freedom

The applications in which hollow metal door and frame products are appropriate are virtually limitless. From apartment buildings, dormitories, military barracks, hotels and schools, to hospitals, industrial buildings, office buildings, airports, convention centers and more.  Hollow metal products have met and exceeded expectations for decades.

What is more remarkable is the degree of design freedom hollow metal construction affords to architects, especially in non-typical situations where a standard-sized product is inappropriate. With the proprietary hollow metal construction techniques and capabilities of HMMA members, design professionals have the opportunity to innovate and create virtually any solution, and do so within a reasonable cost envelope.

Aesthetic Appeal

New design technologies pioneered by HMMA members allow for the creation of aesthetically pleasing hollow metal doors that mimic the look and feel of wood, yet perform better than wood through time. Highly specialized stainless steel and brass clad doors offer additional design choices and represent some of the most attractive products available today.

Backing of the HMMA

Specifying hollow metal products means accessing the combined expertise of HMMA and its member companies, many of whom are leaders in their field. Architects, engineers, contractors and design professionals can take advantage of the advanced methods developed and acquired by HMMA members, as well as access the on-going results of HMMA's rigorous standards and prototype testing efforts (including fire testing) and R&D initiatives. With hollow metal, you get much more than a durable, secure and aesthetically pleasing product, but an entire industry that will stand behind you.
